About the NRMP Main Residency Match
The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Main Residency Match is the primary process through which U.S. and international medical school graduates obtain residency training positions. Each year, tens of thousands of applicants submit rank order lists of programs, and programs rank applicants. The NRMP algorithm then produces a stable match.
The 2025 Match saw 40,049 PGY-1 positions offered across 48 specialties, with an overall fill rate of 94.1%. Understanding these numbers is critical for medical students planning their specialty choice and application strategy.
Data presented here is derived from publicly available NRMP reports. Rx Radio compiles and visualizes this data to make it more accessible and actionable for the medical education community.
